With ‘Wicked: For Good’ in theaters, a new album ‘Petal’ coming in July, and a $250 million empire, Ariana has traded ponytails for power

LOS ANGELES — The last time Ariana Grande released an album, she was 30, freshly divorced, and playing Glinda the Good Witch. Two years later, she’s 32, the highest-paid musical actress in Hollywood, and about to release the most personal record of her career.

Her eighth studio album, ‘Petal,’ will be released July 31, 2026, co-written and produced with longtime collaborator Ilya Salmanzadeh and Max Martin. The lead single, ‘Hate That I Made You Love Me,’ drops May 29 — three days from now.

According to Apple Music, ‘Petal’ will feature 12 tracks, plus a 13th visual interlude titled “petal in the pavement.” The cover, revealed last week, shows Grande in black and white, her signature long curls loose around her face, no ponytail, no cat ears. Her hairstylist Alyx Liu’s teaser montage shows flowers, shadows, and a pair of heels abandoned on wet asphalt.

The theme, her team says: overcoming negative attachments and personal struggles. Translation: it’s the post-divorce, post-Wicked album.

FROM POP STAR TO MOVIE STAR

Grande’s pivot wasn’t planned — it was cast.

Her seventh album, eternal sunshine (March 8, 2024), was her first music in four years, inspired by the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It debuted at No.1, but she didn’t tour. She was in London filming Wicked.

Then came Wicked (2024) and Wicked: For Good, which hits theaters November 21, 2025. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the two-part adaptation made Grande a legitimate actress — and Oscar nominee for Best Supporting Actress. She and Cynthia Erivo recorded the live NBC special Wicked: One Wonderful Night at the Dolby Theatre, released as a soundtrack on November 6, 2025, and as a limited Record Store Day 2LP in 2026 (7,000 copies, 37-piece orchestra).

The films changed her voice — literally. Grande has spoken about retraining her soprano for eight shows a week of belting, and healing vocal nodules during filming. The result: on Petal, she sings lower, breathier, less whistle-tone, more ache.

THE BUSINESS

Grande in 2026 is not just a singer. Parade estimates her net worth at $250 million.

Breakdown: $72 million earned in 2019-2020 from music and endorsements alone; $20-25 million as a coach on The Voice; tens of millions from r.e.m. beauty (now sold to Forma Brands but she retains equity); and an estimated $15 million upfront for both Wicked films plus backend.

She hasn’t toured since the Sweetener World Tour in 2019. She doesn’t need to. Her deluxe Eternal Sunshine Deluxe: Brighter Days Ahead (released March 28, 2025) added six tracks, including one inspired by her Hampstead flat during Wicked filming, and kept her on Spotify’s Top 10 without a single live date.

THE NEW ARIANA

At 32 (born June 26, 1993), Grande has quietly edited her image:

• No ponytail since 2023. Hair down, natural curls.

• No oversized hoodies. She wore custom Vivienne Westwood to the 2026 Met Gala.

• No public relationships since her 2023 divorce from Dalton Gomez and brief link to Wicked co-star Ethan Slater. She is currently single and, friends say, “intentionally boring.”

In interviews, she talks about therapy, not Twitter. She posts once a month, usually a film still or a studio Polaroid. Her last Instagram caption: “softness is not weakness.”

WHY ‘PETAL’ MATTERS

If eternal sunshine was about erasing, Petal is about growing back.

Max Martin’s return — he co-produced “Into You” and “No Tears Left to Cry” — signals pop perfection, but Ilya’s co-production promises the dark, mysterious vibe of the teasers. The title track is rumored to sample her own vocal warm-ups from Wicked.

It’s also strategic: Wicked: For Good will still be in awards season when Petal drops. She will be campaigning for Oscars and promoting a pop album at the same time — something only Lady Gaga has pulled off recently.

Industry insiders expect no tour until 2027. Instead, a short film directed by Grande herself, and a Las Vegas residency in 2027 to combine both catalogs.

As she told Variety in April: “I spent my twenties trying to be liked by everyone. My thirties are about being honest with the people who stayed.”

In 2026, Ariana Grande isn’t chasing a hit. She’s building a second act — one where Glinda takes off the crown, lets her hair down, and finally sings for herself.
